About

Embrace your fool with a group of supportive performers

Brighton Clown School offers workshops tailored to all levels of performer. Classes are led by experienced facilitators and performers, who will aim to teach you not just the fundamentals of the art form of ‘clowning’, but how to develop as a physical theatre performer.

Workshop 1: Clowning For Beginners:
Next class: 16 January 2026

Through theatre games and exercises we explore what makes physical stage action funny, giving you a chance to explore your creative potential as a performer.

You will:

  • play improvisational games
  • connect with your audience (of fellow students)
  • embrace mistakes and failure

Workshop 2: Clown lab
Through exploring original games and exercises, this more experimental class looks at building on the essentials of Gaulier clowning to continue an organic discovery of one’s clown.

Class prices vary, depending on practitioner, but are priced to be as accessible as possible. Previous venues include The Loft at Little Dippers, The Net Loft at Brighton Fishing Museum, Hanover Community Centre and The Studio, Whippingham Road.

online seminars:

#1 Flip the flop: embracing failure through clowning in education

On 10 April, we hosted self-confessed ‘academic idiot’ Sara Sedberg for for an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of how clowning’s playful relationship with failure can transform learning environments.

#2 Why clowning is Still the most important thing ever in actor training

On 31 July, we welcomed clowning pedagogue Alex Bell. Alex is a trained actor and director with a focus on play and clown. He has worked at several drama schools around the UK, such as CSSD, East 15 and LAMDA, and was recently Head of Acting at North Herts College in Hitchin. His approach goes beyond mere comedy, focusing on how clown principles foster presence, authenticity, resilience, and a deep connection to the audience – all vital components for any successful actor.
